As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 15,945.[3] The city is the county seat of Fayette County Fayetteville is located approximately 22 miles from the city of Atlanta.

The population density was 1,126.7 people per square mile (435.2/km²). There were 4,572 housing units at an average density of 462.1 per square mile (178.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 80.44% White, 13.97% African American, 0.22% Native American, 3.33% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.95% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.78% of the population.
There were 4,338 households out of which 36.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.9% were married couples living together, 11.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.6% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48, and the average family size was 3.04. In the city, the population age was spread out with 26.4% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 31.7% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.7 males. The median income for a household in the city was $55,208, and the median income for a family was $62,133. Males had a median income of $43,949 versus $35,035 for females. The per capita income for the city was $26,551. About 2.4% of families and 3.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.1% of those under age 18 and 8.8% of those age 65 or over.
